Selecting the correct child safety seat depends on the age, weight
and size of your child.
Newborns and infants obviously need infant car seats. Infant car
seats are designed to support and secure an infant. You can also use
rear-facing convertible car seats designed for infants. Once your child
weighs about 20 lbs (9-10kg) they can use child car seats.
Toddlers can use child car seats when their weight is more than 20
lbs (9-10kg). If your child is not quite 20 lbs but is older than 1
year they can likely use a child car seat. If your child is physically
too large for an infant car seat and is nearly one year old they can likely
use a child car seat.
Older children need booster seats when their weight is 40-100 lbs
(18-45kg). Generally, when they are too large to comfortably sit in
a child car seat they can use a booster seat. Booster seats mainly
function to sit your child at the correct height and position so the lap
belt and shoulder belt are safely positioned for them.
Different brands of car seats may vary slightly from these
guidelines. Be aware of the manufacturers recommendations for the
car seat you choose.
If you choose a car seat from one of the major brand names you’ll
find that the appropriate car seat is safe for your infant or child.
Booster seats, infant car seats and child car seats have to meet strict
federal standards.
