Keep Your Baby Entertained and Safe in Their Car Seat
Ease your anxiety level as well.
Give your baby safe toys to play with while riding in his or her car seat.
Do not give them any toys with pointed or unprotected narrow ends or corners
that could jab their eye if they are bounced when your car hits a bump or starts
and stops suddenly. For example books with sharpish cover corners.
Instead, give him or her chewable, soft books.
Most quality infant toys are designed to be safe for a baby who hasn't developed
the fine motor control necessary to avoid bonking their head. And if they do
bonk them self it's usually without much force.
When riding in a vehicle, however, forces are amplified by the motion of the
vehicle with sudden stops, starts, and bouncing due to road conditions. As a
result forces are much stronger. A toy that seemed perfectly safe at home,
could, in a bouncing car strike your baby with much greater impact.
There are a number of toys specifically designed for use with child safety
seats. They typically are a flexible arch that clips over an infant car seat
and dangles soft colorful toys above your baby within their reach.
These have the added bonus of always being available to your baby. They
can't drop them and have the fall out of reach.
Individual soft or padded toys are suitable as well. As are plastic chew toys,
rattles, and plastic squeaky toys. A problem with individual toys is that they
can fall out of reach of your baby or yourself.
We made thin straps of Velcro to secure toys. We wrap the strap around the toy and
the handle of the infant car seat. This way the toy could be dangled above
our baby within their reach.
Using straps of various lengths we could dangle a wide variety of toys and
distractions above our baby. The straps are also useful in other situations,
such as attaching toys to strollers so they don't get dropped on the ground
unseen by you.
Great Exercise
A car seat toy can engage you baby's body as well as their mind.
Some car seat toys just beg to be grabbed, tugged and gummed. The
right car seat toy will keep you baby physically active on those
those long drives.
Knowing that your baby can safely play with toys while riding in your
car will make it easier for you to drive. You'll be more relaxed and less
likely to frequently check your baby. If you are driving you need to focus
on your job at that moment which is to get you and your baby safely
through traffic to your destination.
