Looking for child car seats and toddler car seats already?

Eventually it has to happen. You knew it would, but it seems so soon. Just yesterday, you brought your sweet bundle of joy home in a carefully selected infant car seat. Today it seems they’ve out grown it and need a real child car seat.

Once again it’s time to find your way through the overwhelming selection of child car seats to the right one for your child and for you. Child car seats also double as toddler car seats. So this time you’ll be finding a safety seat that will last for years.

Harness Systems

As with infant car seats you have a choice of three point or five point harness systems. Child safety seat experts recommend the five point harness system. The five point harness takes a bit more time to fasten but is the safest.

Look for child car seats with a five point harness that you can tighten after fastening by pulling a strap sticking out from the front of the car seat. Make sure the strap is easy to grasp and pull. The strap locks automatically to prevent the harness loosening. Usually a small lever adjacent to the tightening strap will unlock the strap to allow you to loosen the harness. Eddie Bauer used to have a lever you pulled up with your finger. They’ve recently changed it to a push down lever which is quite a bit easier to use.

Comfort

Look for toddler car seats with good padding along the back, head and especially on the seat. Some have surprising little seat padding over top of quite uneven and rough plastic seats. If the seat feels uncomfortable to your hand imagine how it would feel to sit in such a child car seat for a long period of time.

Features

Toddler car seats typically come with other features such as side pockets or cup holders. These can be quite handy. Use them for holding toys, cups, bottles, books, sunglasses or a child's favorite treasure of the day.
