Most baby car seats are designed to also be infant carriers. Light and compact, some even have ergonomically designed handles to make them easier to carry and comfortable on your hands. Whatever the handle type make sure it’s not so tall that the carrier drags on the ground when you carry it while walking or it drags on stairs as you go up and down.

Many infant car seats have a stay-in-car base onto which the baby car seat will snap. This makes loading them into the car quick, easy, safe, and low stress for both you and your baby. The better baby car seat systems have a built-in leveling device to help you get the correct sitting angle for your baby.

Look for vehicle seat belt hooks on infant car seats. This will enable you to use the baby car seat in another vehicle without the stay-in-car base.

Baby car seat safety experts recommend that all child safety seats be installed in the rear seat. So, when shopping keep your vehicle's rear seat and access in mind. Make sure the baby car seat isn’t too large or awkward to move in and out of your vehicle.

Many baby car seats have tall handles making them difficult to hold onto as you move the car seat in and out of your vehicle. This is especially important for two-door vehicles which often have a lower roof line over the back seat. Make sure there is enough space above the handle of the installed baby car seat so you can lift it on and off the stay-in-car base.

Baby car seat safety experts recommend the five point harness system for holding your baby in the infant car seat. The five-point harness takes slightly more effort to fasten than the three point harness. However, if you are using an infant car seat that doubles as a carrier you’ll be placing your baby into the carrier before putting it into the vehicle so fastening a five point harness will take no effort at all.

Never buy used child safety seats. Safety standards have been changing during the last few years. Never use car seats which have been involved in a crash - non-visible damage may have occurred rendering them unsafe.

Infant car seats are usually light and compact. They’ll feel like that as you carry them about, until baby get larger and heavier - then the baby car seat isn’t so easy to carry. There’s a solution to that also. Read about baby strollers and travel systems.
